Now that June has arrived, we are entirely into the warmth of the summer. This is great news for many members of the elderly community who tend to struggle during cooler temperatures. Elderly people tend to have a more challenging time adjusting to the cold than to a warmer climate. However, this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be cautious about some potential dangers that come with summer.
Summer is one of our favorite seasons here at Park Vista, and we will be talking about lots of summer things as the season begins. Among them are hydration levels, how to get relaxed, dressing properly, using sunscreen, and even investing in eyewear, but we will get to those in a later blog.
Everyone needs a little sun, but it is essential to take the proper precautions, especially for seniors. Here at Park Vista, a leading assisted living facility in Deforest, we are especially careful. Here are a few safety tips we recommend this summer.
Connect With Neighbors
Our Deforest assisted living facility encourages compassionate closeness and connections among our residents. This is what makes Park Vista so different from other facilities. Our community is incredible about checking in on each other. This is especially important if you do not have any family nearby. Make a plan to check on your neighbor each day at a specific time.
Learn What Heat Exhaustion Looks Like
As we age, the body has a more challenging time regulating temperature. At our assisted living facility in Deforest we know just what to look for; do you? Here are the symptoms and signs of hypothermia just in case:
- Flushed, dry skin
- Headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fainting
- The absence of sweat even though it’s hot
- A body temperature above 104 degrees
- A rapid pulse or heavy breathing
- A sudden change in behavior (getting irritable, agitated, or confused)
If you see these signs of heat exhaustion, please call for help immediately, whether it is yourself or a neighbor. Our Deforest senior living community is here to help you in case of an emergency.
Use Bug Spray
Bugs love it when it’s hot outside; people tend to flock outside when the weather improves, and so do bugs. Seniors are very vulnerable to diseases mosquitos carry, and those receiving memory care in Deforest need special attention. We recommend stocking up on bug spray this summer to avoid bug bites and other potential issues.
